BOTOX®, manufactured by Allergan, was approved by the FDA in 2002 while XEOMIN®, made by Merz, was approved in 2011. Both are injectables used to treat wrinkles especially forehead lines, frown lines, crows’ feet and neck lines.
How do they work?
Both agents are neuromodulators, which means they temporarily change the nerve impulses of specific muscles. They both block the nerve impulses of the targeted muscles. The agents thus reduce or eliminate wrinkles created by contracting muscles.
XEOMIN® has no additives and is thus sometimes described as a “naked” neuromodulator. It, therefore, does not need to be refrigerated before being given to a patient. That makes it easier to store and transport than BOTOX®.
More importantly, a “naked” neuromodulator is less likely to trigger the development of antibodies which means it won’t cause an allergic reaction. The patient’s body is also less likely to develop a resistance to XEOMIN®.
How are they administered?
Both BOTOX® and XEOMIN® are injectables. A doctor will inject either agent into a muscle.
BOTOX® and XEOMIN® can be injected in several different places during a single treatment.
Treatment sessions should be held three months apart for both medications. Using either agent more often will not increase its effectiveness.
Both BOTOX® and XEOMIN® take about 7 days to show their full effects which last for three to six months. If a patient used 20 units of BOTOX® in a treatment and then decided to switch to XEOMIN® for their next treatment, they would probably need 20 units of XEOMIN® to get the same results.
What are the risks of using them?
BOTOX® and XEOMIN® can cause bruising at the injection site, a common side effect. Other common side effects can include headache and dry mouth.
