If you feel you have a nose that is too large, too small, too pointy or not pointy enough, nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, may be for you. Rhinoplasty is a common surgical procedure used to alter the shape and/or size of the nose, as well as to fix any medical problems such as frequent headaches, nasal injuries, or difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum.

Before Rhinoplasty

Before you have rhinoplasty surgery, you will need to consult with a cosmetic or plastic surgeon like Dr. Virender Singhal. The surgeon will examine your nose and gather information about your general health in order to make the best decision about how to proceed. The contours of your new nose and any corrective processes that need to occur during the surgery will also be discussed. You will also be informed on what to expect and what needs to be done before, during and after surgery. Some basic medical tests may be necessary to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo surgery. You also need to understand all instructions and be willing to follow them.

How is Rhinoplasty Surgery Done?

Rhinoplasty may be done in the hospital or as an outpatient procedure, depending upon how extensive the surgery is. The amount of anesthesia you will require will also depend upon the amount of surgery you will need to go through. You may have local or general anesthetic, depending on what your doctor recommends. Sometimes cartilage or bone is transferred from the ribs to the nose to reshape it and give it strength. In other cases, synthetic filler is used to fill out dents in the nose.

After Rhinoplasty

You will need to have someone available to take you home after the surgery. You will still be feeling the results of anesthesia and will be taking pain medication, so you will also want someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. You will be given specific instructions on how to care for your wounds. Your nose will be bandaged and possibly have splints inserted into the nasal cavities, so you may also want to have some ice handy to keep your nose from swelling.

Ask your doctor to answer any questions you may have before or after surgery. The amount of time needed to heal from rhinoplasty varies from one week upward, depending on the extent of your procedure. Before you know it, your nose will function better and compliment your looks and facial features.
