What is a Tummy Tuck?

A protruding abdomen can develop in almost anybody, even individuals who manage to maintain healthy body weight. It may be due to weakened muscles, pregnancy, weight gain, or heredity. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate the excess stubborn fat and skin while repairing the underlying muscles to create a narrower, flatter abdomen.

Incisions are typically placed underneath the hip bones and across the pubic area. A second incision is usually placed around the navel. Excess skin and fat are then removed, and underlying muscles that are loose or stretched out are tightened. The skin is then lifted and re-draped, tightening the area.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

During your consultation with the medical staff, your medical history will be reviewed and an examination will be performed to determine your general health. The ideal candidate is in fair health with no serious medical conditions that could impair surgery or healing. A tummy tuck is not a solution for weight loss, and those who are currently on a weight loss program should aim to reach their ideal weight before considering tummy tuck surgery.

Women who are planning for future pregnancy may consider delaying surgery, as stretching the abdominal skin can significantly alter the results of a tummy tuck.

What is the Recovery Like?

After tummy tuck surgery, discomfort is commonly experienced and can be easily controlled with medications that will be prescribed to you. Specific instructions for showering and caring for your bandages and incision sites will be given to you before surgery. A drain placed at surgery is typically removed between three and five days afterward.

The full extent of recovery depends on the individual; those with stronger abdominal muscles are likely to recover more quickly, but typically between one and two weeks should be taken off from work to properly heal.

Although it can take anywhere from nine months to a year for the surgical scars to fade, the results are immediate and permanent. Patients should expect to adopt a healthy diet and exercise routine to maintain results.
