There are many reasons why women may feel less endowed about their breasts. Whether it’s a lack of physical growth during puberty, loss of shape or volume from pregnancy or breastfeeding, uneven breasts, insufficient breast size, or loss of a breast due to surgery, a breast augmentation can balance the symmetry of your body with fuller breasts.
At Singhal Plastic Surgery, our breast augmentation procedure is safe and creates results that look and feel natural. Contact us today at our Kansas City office to schedule a consultation.
What is Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation, or enlargement, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to increase the size and fullness of the breasts in the most natural way possible, and it is customized to fit the needs of each woman. One of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States; breast augmentations can be completely tailored to fit the body type and expectations of the individual.
During breast augmentation surgery, incisions can be placed around the nipple, under the breast, or under the arm. Dr. Singhal prefers to place the incision under the breast in the natural crease that is almost invisible after initial healing.
The Saline implant is a silicone shell filled with saline solution, while the Silicone gel implant is filled with cohesive silicone gel; and it can be either smooth or textured depending on patient preference.
What Type of Implants Should I Get?
There are various sizes and placement options available, which can be discussed prior to surgery. Implants can either be round or teardrop-shaped, depending on what kind of look you are trying to create. Teardrop-shaped implants tend to look more anatomical and create a gentle slope whereas round implants create a rounder curve in the upper part of the breast. The implants can be placed under the breast tissue or under the Pectoralis major muscle. However, Dr. Singhal believes that implants placed under the muscle have several disadvantages, and he now routinely places the implants under a much stronger layer of tissue called fascia. This type of implant placement avoids the need to cut into muscle and keeps implants from riding high with muscle contraction.
When choosing implant size, it also important to have realistic expectations. Women who wish to drastically change their cup size must have enough breast tissue to safely support larger implants, otherwise, implants may be distinctly visible or other complications may occur.
What is the Recovery Like?
You will feel some discomfort during the first few days after surgery. Dr. Singhal prefers to do this surgery while you are sedated, with tumescent anesthesia. This allows you to have a faster recovery and minimal discomfort. You should also make arrangements for someone to not only drive you home afterward but to also assist you with daily activities during the first 24 hours. You may also experience tightness as the breasts adjust to the implants, and a bra will be placed on you to be worn at all times except in the shower to support the new contours.
Patients are typically able to return to work after a few days, but strenuous activity should be avoided for the first two weeks after surgery. Residual swelling and bruising should fade within a few weeks, and the full results of your improved breasts will be evident.
Although breast augmentation surgery is meant to be long-lasting, implants may need to be checked annually in order to check for leaks and overall breast health.
