What is Eyelid Surgery?

Also commonly referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or both at the same time. There are a variety of surgeries available depending on your individual needs:

  • Traditional eyelid surgery involves making an incision on the crease of the upper eyelid toward the temples. For the lower eyelid, the incision is made along the lash line. Both incision locations are discreet, hiding visible scars.
  • The Transconjunctival Approach is a newer technique where the incision is placed inside of the lower eyelid. While excess fat can be removed this way, excess skin cannot.

You can discuss which procedure is right for you during your consultation with our medical team.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Individuals in generally good health and who have realistic expectations are usually approved for this procedure, but whether eyelid surgery is right for you will be determined during your consultation.

What is the Procedure Like?

Typically during eyelid surgery, you are awake, nonetheless very relaxed. Local and intravenous anesthetics are used, but general anesthetic is rarely necessary. Performed as an outpatient procedure in our surgical center, eyelid surgery consists of removing excess skin, extracting or repositioning fat, and tightening the underlying muscles.

The extent of eyelid surgery depends on your individual condition and preferences. The result is eyes that appear wider, more alert, youthful and refreshed.

What is Recovery Like?

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and assist you with daily activities for the first 24 hours. Bruising and swelling are common after this procedure, which should subside within 7- 10 days. Slightly blurred vision is also normal, but temporary and usually from the eye ointment. You should be able to enjoy your new look after about 2 weeks.

Although results are permanent, wrinkles can still occur in the eyelids later on. However, it is unlikely that you will develop bags underneath your eyes if fat was removed or repositioned.
